How do I know if I need Ear Wax Removal?

Experiencing any of the following symptoms may indicate earwax build up:

  • Reduced hearing or muffled sounds: This can be a gradual change or a sudden decrease in hearing ability.

  • A feeling of fullness or blockage: This sensation can create a sense of pressure within the ear canal.

  • Itchiness in the ear canal: Persistent itching can be a sign of irritation caused by excess earwax.

  • Ear pain or discomfort: While not always present, earaches can occur with significant wax build up.

  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing noises): The perception of sound without an external source can be associated with earwax blockage.

If you recognise any of these symptoms, a professional earwax removal appointment may be beneficial. A qualified healthcare professional can safely examine your ears and remove any excess wax if necessary.

Important Note: Earwax removal may not be suitable for everyone. Certain symptoms can indicate an underlying ear infection.

Please consult your GP first if you are also experiencing:

  • Elevated body temperature

  • Drainage from the ear canal

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Flaky or scaly skin near the ear

  • Fatigue or lack of energy

  • Sore throat

  • Severe earache

A doctor can diagnose the cause of your symptoms and determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

What happens during my appointment?

Before your appointment

We offer a free, no obligation, ear wax check to see if treatment is suitable for you. Following this, if it is agreed that an ear wax removal appointment is necessary, for a week before your appointment we suggest that you use an olive oil ear spray or ear drops daily (these are available to purchase from us). This will help soften the wax and make it easier and more comfortable to remove.

During your appointment

We will chat with you to get a clear understanding of your ear health, and will be able to suggest which wax removal method will be most suited to you.

How Do We Remove Excess Wax From The Ear?

During your appointment, our experienced clinician, will assess the amount, consistency, and location of your earwax. This comprehensive evaluation allows them to select the most effective and appropriate wax removal method for your individual needs.

Microsuction

For moderate earwax impaction, microsuction offers a safe and efficient removal method. This technique utilises a microscopic view and a fine suction probe to gently and precisely remove excess wax from the ear canal, ensuring a thorough and comfortable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Unfortunately, many people have reported no longer being able to access free earwax removal services from their GP. This depends on the area and surgery, but is often down to the fact that the old ‘syringing’ method – previously widely available on the NHS – has been found to be unsafe and is no longer used.

While the NHS could switch to modern, safe removal techniques, GP practices are not always provided funding to offer these services. And if they do, waiting times can be very long. The RNID charity is campaigning to re-establish this vital service throughout the NHS. But in the meantime, your best choice will often be an independent hearing care provider.

  • While earwax removal might seem like a simple task, we generally advise against attempting it yourself. Using cotton swabs or other objects can actually push wax further into the ear canal, causing discomfort and potentially impacting your hearing.

Here at Happy Ears Eastbourne, we recommend professional earwax removal for several reasons:

    • Safe and Effective Techniques: Our qualified clinician, Imelda, uses the latest, safest methods to ensure a thorough and comfortable wax removal experience.

    • Reduced Risk of Infection: Our controlled clinic environment prioritises hygiene, minimising the chance of infection associated with at-home cleaning methods.

    • Personalised Care: Imelda will assess your individual needs and recommend the most suitable treatment option for you.

We understand that visiting a clinic may not always be convenient. In special cases, we do offer a professional home visit. This may incur an additional charge.

  • While earwax naturally cleans and protects your ears, sometimes it can build up excessively. Here are some factors that can contribute:

    • Disrupting Natural Removal: Using cotton swabs or other objects to clean your ears can actually push wax deeper into the canal, causing a blockage and potentially stimulating further wax production.

    • External Blockers: Frequent use of earphones or earplugs can trap wax within the canal, hindering its natural removal process.

    • Anatomical Factors: Narrow or damaged ear canals, or having a lot of hair growth in the canal, can create a physical barrier that traps wax and prevents it from exiting naturally.

    • Skin Conditions: Skin conditions like eczema affecting your scalp or ear area can influence earwax production and consistency, making it more prone to buildup.

    • Ear Canal Inflammation: "Swimmer's ear" (otitis externa) can cause inflammation in the ear canal, potentially altering wax production and making it harder to remove.

If you're concerned about excess earwax buildup, it's best to consult a healthcare professional. They can safely examine your ears and recommend the most suitable treatment option.
